How We Stay Organized on A THREE Day Photoshoot | Boston Interior Photographer

Staying organized is top priority to keep any shoot running smoothly. That’s why as your interior design photographer, we spend time before the shoot discussing details, outlining priority shots, and laying out your shot list room by room. This helps ensure ahead of time that nothing gets missed in the creative storm that happens day of.

Recently we spent 3 FULL DAYS in a home in Concord, Massachusetts, and honestly it had so many beautiful nooks and crannies I could’ve spent even more. Staying organized and on top of everything across multiple days and with a larger team can be a daunting task, but truly sets the tone for success when there’s a lot to be accomplished.

How We Stay Organized:

Shot List

With interior design photography in New England, the homes we get to step into are always stunning, and often have a lot of character. But that means it can be easy to get carried away with all the beautiful details. This home in Concord was a BEAST, 3 full floors of gorgeously curated rooms (and a poolhouse!). Our conversation prior to the shoot is where we’ll create the shot list, discuss the best times of day to photograph certain rooms, and get completely on the same page about what you want to see from your photos. We always begin the photoshoot day with a walk through of the space.

Pick Your Priority

The shot list is the framework, but whether doing interior photoshoot for your portfolio or for award submissions, we make sure we are first prioritizing what you need the most. Key details that are unique to you and your brand, or big spaces that had a lot of personal touch are usually priority. In this Massachusetts home we put a lot of love into the kitchen, especially because the designer team did too!

All Hands on Deck

As a photographer for interior designers, I know working with creatives we can get very focused on what is right in front of us. That’s why it helps so much to have a plan for staying organized when it comes to staging props and packing up. Taking photos of a space beforehand in case we move anything that needs to be put back, keeping packing materials and labeling boxes with their contents before pulling props, makes the all hands on deck pack-up move that much faster. In Concord, the garage became our “drop zone”, full of cardboard boxes and packing materials as we made a brand new build look a little more lived in, imagine if we had had to put everything away and play guess who with vases and shipping material.

The photoshoot we did in this home was also with the intent of the interior photography being used for award submissions. After completely documenting this gorgeous property, the photos, the behind-the-scenes reels, any content taken, couldn’t see the light of day until the project was published. We waited over a year before New England Home Magazine picked up the project. Check out the behind-the-scenes reels on my Instagram @emilyobrienphoto_design for a deeper look into the process. It is so exciting to be able to share these images now that this incredible space was showcased by New England Home.
